Ode to a Friend

At the edge of a cliff I stand,
the wind is relentless, the height makes me dizzy.
I stand alone, afraid.
Hidden deep in my thoughts are illusions of grandeur
of glorious wings that I wish could take me above the storming rocky peaks that loom ahead.
Lost in my despair, and drowning in unbelievable sorrow
I turn away from the daunting hills.

Jump.

My innate cynicism kicks in

"Just to crash down on the jagged cliffs below?"

Jump.

Now it just turns into rage

"Why, if you think I'll just jump to give you some twisted pleasure in watching me crash, you're looking in the wrong place Mister!"

Soft smile, rumbling voice

As Vampires, Werewolves, Gloriously terrifying creatures, Ghostly love stories, Angels, Gods and Goddesses , Mythological entities and bizarre humans dance before my eyes; my wings instead of gently unfolding as those of an Angel, spread in lighting speed.

Jump.

There is no fear

I fly

The wind is no longer an enemy, but a welcoming lover
those rocky peaks; are now rolling hills
Those storms, my greatest thrill.

I look down

You're no where to be found
Oh, you have no wings
Despair threatens me with it's sticky fingers

I look up

Ah! How could I be so silly?!
You have no wings,
yet fly higher than us all.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ricky,

You heard the tune only I danced to
You understood the walking contradiction
You saw the beauty as no one else could
You faced the ugly and never backed off
You killed the dragons and rescued the princess
You reveled in the evil and loved the good
You admired the Sex Goddess and the Nun the same
You ran with with the wolves and weren't afraid
You gave me my wings
you were the wind beneath them
You unlocked my dreams
and taught me how to make them real
You believed
even when I was unsure
You made me believe.

You will forever be my favorite story teller and most loved writer
my mentor, and someone I have never been prouder of calling friend.

-Ricky, I will never be as good as you...

- Baby, you already are!

All this to say two words, even tho' they could never be enough...

Thank you

Did I gave you wings indeed? Love, they have always been there, coming out of that beautiful point between your shoulders I can only dream of. The fact that you couldn't see them (is that what it was?) doesn't make them unreal. Or, at least, not more unreal than all the rest. I saw them. I have always seen them. I saw them the first time when you were a strange girl with a strange hat, sitting on those steps. They were there, then. I didn't do anything to put them there. But I am proud to have been there while they spreaded and took all the sky, and swallowed the moon, and made the night darker. Such wings? They are the night in which I fly. And I am happy to be there.
Now, hon: who loves you?
